CIW Web Security Associate is a home study training course for students who want to know how to secure networks from unauthorised activities. Individuals with these security skills can pursue or advance careers in many aspects of online and network security including network server administrators, firewall administrators, systems administrators, application developers and IT security officers.

This course identifies security principles and techniques that enable you to stop a hacker by understanding how to implement access control lists, operating system hardening and firewall technology. It also teaches you how to personalise your network security system so you can create a solution that adheres to universal principles, but also conforms to your business needs in responding to specific hacker attacks.

You will learn about authentication procedures, encryption standards and implementations that help ensure proper user authentication. You will also learn about the specific ports and protocols that hackers manipulate, and about direct and indirect ways to protect your network operating systems. Finally, you will learn how to respond to and report hacker activity, engage in proactive detection, and always keep your company’s needs in mind.

  • Define the significance of network security, and identify various elements of an effective security policy, including risk factors, security-related organisations, key resources to secure, general security threat types, access control
  • Define encryption and the encryption methods used in internetworking
  • Use universal guidelines and principles of effective network security to create effective specific solutions
  • Apply security principles and identify security attacks
  • Identify firewall types and define common firewall terminology
  • Plan a firewall system that incorporates multiple levels of protection, including firewall system design, proactive detection, setting traps, security breach response and security alerting organisations

Course Duration & Support

CIW Web Security Associate is designed as an instructor led course but can also be used as a home study learning course for individuals who do not have the flexibility to attend traditional classroom training. When used as a home study course you can complete it in your own time and the approximate total study time is 150 hours. Technical support for this course is provided directly by CIW via their student web portal.

Practice Exams

Practice exams are included with this course. They are provided online and are designed to help assess knowledge on specific objectives and reinforce learning. They include Objective Reviews and Quizzes, Reinforcement Tests, Self-Assessment Tests and a time-limited test that consists of a random selection of questions covering all learning objectives. The Practice Exams most closely simulate the experience of the Certification Exam.

Certification Exam

On completion of this course you can apply for the internationally recognised CIW 1D0-571 examination which, if passed, awards the student with the CIW Web Security Associate Certification. This exam has a time limit of 90 minutes, consists of 62 questions and the passing score is 76%. Exams must be sat at one of the 89 registered Prometric testing centres in the UK. You can purchase a Certification Exam Voucher with this course or at a later date. Certification Exam Vouchers are valid for one year from date of purchase.

Pre-Course Requirements

The CIW Web Security Associate course is designed for students with a good understanding of IT, computers and the Internet including knowledge of networks and servers to a level consistent with that found in the CIW Web Foundations Series. Students should also be familiar with the Microsoft Windows operating system before taking this course as it does not provide entry-level computer literacy. Note: This course is not compatible with Apple computers.
